During my time as an AmeriCorps member with SBP, a nonprofit dedicated to natural disaster recovery, I played a key supporting role in rebuilding homes for vulnerable communities affected by disasters. This experience was eye-opening, revealing the profound impact design can have on health, safety, and quality of life. I witnessed firsthand how mold, inadequate infrastructure, and unstable living conditions can affect people's well-being. Witnessing families navigate these challenges made me realize that design isn't just about creating beautiful spaces; it's about restoring safety, dignity, and a sense of belonging. This experience pushed me to combine my love for design with a greater purpose. It helped shape a design approach centered on sustainability, human well-being, and resilient planning, to create spaces that truly support the people who inhabit them—especially vulnerable groups.
